Chad Seltzer is the owner of TMW Barbell, a Weightlifting and Powerlifting gym, in Los Alamitos, CA. He has competed and coached Olympic Weightlifting for 7 and 5 years respectively and loves the extremely technical aspects of the lifts as well as the additional strength components that go into an athlete’s success in the sport. As a personal trainer and coach for 17 years, his main focus is on body mechanics, proper technique, and sound program design. Chad has participated in a variety of sports but none have caught his eye as much as Weightlifting and the amazing community that surrounds the sport.

Frequently Asked Questions

What age groups and levels of lifters do you train?

We have lifters of all ages and abilities! Some of the best weightlifters and powerlifters of all time started when they were under 10 years old. Whether you are a beginner or have lifted for years, we have a place for you on our team.

Do you only take competitive athletes?

We have a lot of competitive athletes in our community but we do not require our athletes to compete in weightlifting or powerlifting.

What if I can't come and train in person?

Although most of our athletes come and train in person 2-6x per week, we have a lot of options for our lifters. For those coming in person, we offer additional training days outside of TMW Barbell training times via the TrainHeroic app where they can train at any other gym. For athletes who aren't in the immediate area and want to join our team, we have remote coaching options also through the TrainHeroic app.

I've never done any type of weightlifting or powerlifting. Where should I start?

We have a 3-session starter kit for both weightlifting and powerlifting. This 1-on-1 introductory package will take you through weightlifting movements (snatch, clean, jerk) or powerlifting movements (squat, bench press, deadlift) to ensure you have a base of understanding before joining the rest of the team on a structured program.

How does scheduling work? Duration and frequency of training sessions?

We have our athletes schedule through the MindBody app from one week out up to 30 minutes before the start of a training time slot. Each training session is 2 hours long and athletes can train as many times a week as they need to blow their competition away. If an athlete trains 3x per week (for example) but wants to train additional sessions outside of TMW Barbell, we will program the additional days at no extra cost.

Do athletes need to eat a certain way to train with you?

Since weightlifting and powerlifting are weight-class based strength sports, we have the option of adding nutrition coaching services to your training. Nutrition education is important but we do not require our athletes to eat any particular way.

What is your ratio of male to female lifters?

We currently have about a 60:40 ratio of male to female lifters.

How big is your facility?

Our Los Alamitos location is 1,650 square feet with 3 platforms, 5 squat racks, and all the plates, bars, dumbbells, and kettlebells you need to humble your competition.

How is training structured? Do you offer groups or 1-on-1?

We offer both! Our barbell club is a ratio of 1-12 athletes (depending on how many sign up per session with overlapping 2 hour sessions) to a coach with a mix of weightlifters and powerlifters from session to session. For more 1-on-1 attention, we also have 1:1 and 2:1 coaching options available.

What kind of music do you play?

Our music taste varies. We play a lot of rock and hip hop but are open to other genres or complete silence for increased training focus.
